English 1 Honors (Period 5)

Course Description

ELA 9 Pre-AP covers the same curriculum and syllabus of instruction as ELA 9 College Prep. It is a year-long course designed for ninth grade college-bound students. The course integrates writing, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and speaking through an intense, in depth, analytical and interdisciplinary approach to literature and nonfiction. The course will provide students with a survey of literature, emphasizing the genres of the short story, novels, poetry and drama. Writing assignments will provide intensive practices in composition as it applies to the assigned readings. Composition units focus on developing the skills necessary to address the genres (narrative, expository, and informative) of the CCSS. The intent of the course is to prepare students for ELA 10 Pre-AP, ELA 11-AP and ELA 12-AP in their junior and senior years. Honors English 1 emphasizes writing skills, reading skills, speaking skills and listening skills while focusing on World Literature and expository writing. A passing grade for both semesters of English 1 is required to graduate from KCHS. (A passing grade for this course is 60% or higher.)
