College Prep - Modern World History (Period 1)

Course Description

THE COURSE

World History is a study of the major events that have shaped our world in the last 400 years. However, to fully understand these recent events, we must take a sneak peak a bit farther back in time. We begin with the origins of civilization and the social orders that were created within these civilizations, including early aspects of democracy. We will look at how monotheistic religions have helped to shape the world over time through organization and conflict. Our study will include revolutions, independence movements, and mass conflicts. It will cover the largest period of economic growth and the worst economic disaster that the world has ever seen.

We will use the following themes to analyze the importance of these events:

Interaction between European Countries and the World.

Poverty and Prosperity – How have different events and economic policies affected peoples at different times?

States and Other Institutions of Power - How have different governments and ruling bodies acted in regards to their populations.

Individual and Society - How have individuals and societies changed and impacted one another during the time period studied?
