About the Program

Purpose

The purpose of GEAR UP is to increase the number of students who have the opportunity to achieve a postsecondary education.

Outcomes

GEAR UP students are more prepared for college than non GEAR UP students, by far. Three fourths of GEAR UP students complete UC's a-g requirements by the end of the 12th grade, compared to one third of students statewide.

Core Services

Academic Advising

GEAR UP specializes in individual and group academic advising that helps students stay motivated and on-track to complete the 'a-g' college-preparatory courses unique to each high school and required for UC and CSU admission.

Academic Enrichment

Through academic enrichment services such as intensive workshops and summer courses, GEAR UP students improve basic skills, master advanced high school curriculum, and have the opportunity to engage in the intellectual life of the University through study and research.

Entrance Exams

SAT and ACT preparation workshops familiarize students with test formats, study strategies, and test-taking tips, and in-depth classes provide test-taking strategies and extensive practice with verbal and mathematics questions.

College Knowledge

Students and parents learn about financial aid and scholarships, how to fill out college applications and write an effective personal statement. They tour campuses, attend workshops, go on field trips, and learn about California's postsecondary education options.
